Chautauqua County New York PIRP (Point & Insurance Reduction Program) Defensive Driving Course is state approved and may be taken entirely online.  Defensive driving courses are completed by New York drivers who have received a police citation for a traffic violation, drivers who wish to obtain a quick and easy insurance discount or to remove points from their driving record.

Chautauqua County, New York drivers age 55 and over may take the mature driver improvement course for a senior citizen insurance discount.  Check with your insurance company or agent to learn more.  The senior driving course is designed as a refresher to update on New York state traffic laws.  Most drivers age 55 and up have been driving long before the smartphone era and highway traffic safety involving driving and texting were not around when the older drivers took their drivers license test.

The senior citizen PIRP or mature driver course is generally given highly positive remarks among those who have completed the course, and judged favorably by most major insurance companies.  The actual discount for drivers age 55 and older who have taken the course can vary. Generally the discount is 10%, but some companies provide as much as a 15% discount.  Contact your insurance agent of the insurance provider for additional information.

Taxi cab  and limousine drivers are required by the of New York TLC (Taxi and Limousine Commission) to take the state approved defensive driving course every three years.

The Chautauqua County NY Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)

PIRP is also known as the Defensive Driving Course or Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course. It is a comprehensive driver safety course which provides knowledge and techniques for safe and lawful driving.  Private companies and organizations all over the state offer the course.  To be approved by DMV, courses must meet strict standards for the type of information presented and program effectiveness.

  • help to prevent you from losing your license in the event you accrued 11 or more points on your driving record
    • 4 points are 'subtracted' for the purposes of calculating a suspension if you have 11 or more points

 Completing a course does not
  • prevent a mandatory suspension or revocation

How can I find an NY course?

You can take a course in a classroom, online or through other delivery methods such as DVD or digital cable.    

 
How long is a classroom course?

The classroom course is 320 minutes long. It is presented in one or more sessions. The course must include essential information about traffic safety. It must cover these and other topics: driver attitude and behavior, defensive driving techniques, and the Vehicle & Traffic Law.  No formal testing is required to complete the course.
